Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) has once again proven why it remains the nation’s most trusted insurer. With a dominant 56.7% market share in first-year premium income (FYPI) for the financial year 2025–26, LIC continues to lead the Indian life insurance sector — far ahead of every private competitor.

The numbers speak for themselves: total premium income crossed ₹5.35 lakh crore in FY26, a solid 9.8% growth over the previous year. Net profit surged to ₹57,419 crore, up 19.25% year-on-year. And in the group business — where LIC has always been a powerhouse — the corporation holds a staggering 71.36% market share, reinforcing its role as the backbone of group insurance and pension plans in India.

📊 FY2018 vs FY2026 – a decade of dominance

Back in FY2018, LIC had already achieved a first-year premium (FYP) of ₹1,34,551.68 crore with a market share of 69.40%. At that time, HDFC Life was the top private player with a 5.85% share. Fast forward to FY2026, and LIC’s FYP (individual new business) stands at ₹67,676 crore — while its total premium income (including renewals and group business) has soared to ₹5.35 lakh crore.

The company’s group and pension plans continue to perform exceptionally well, with new business premium income from this segment reaching ₹82,807 crore — a clear sign that institutions and corporates trust LIC above all others.

What does this mean for you? Whether you’re a policyholder, an investor, or simply someone watching the financial landscape, LIC’s performance is a story of resilience and relevance. The corporation has not only held its ground against private insurers but has also expanded its reach — all while maintaining the trust of over 280 million policyholders.

In the private sector, HDFC Life continues to lead, but its market share of around 5–6% is a fraction of LIC’s commanding position. The gap is not just about numbers — it’s about the deep-rooted faith that generations of Indians have placed in LIC.

🔍 Looking ahead: With new products like the LIC Jeevan Utsav Single Premium and LIC Jeevan Sathi plans launched in 2026, LIC is adapting to modern needs while staying true to its core promise of security and returns. The company is also doubling down on digital transformation, making it easier than ever for customers to manage policies, pay premiums, and file claims.

As LIC approaches its Platinum Jubilee, it manages assets worth over ₹57 lakh crore and owns real estate valued at around ₹60,000 crore. That’s the kind of scale that inspires confidence — and it’s why LIC remains, without question, India’s largest and most trusted insurance company.
